0:31Wow, circuits have so many different parts and connections.
0:36Resistors and capacitors have two connections.
0:43Transistors have three connections.
0:49But ICs, well, ICs can have lots of connections.
0:56So, why are you so different IC?
1:00Perhaps I could answer that question.
1:03Hey, you're an IC.
1:06Indeed.
1:07My name is Hans and I'm an integrated circuit.
1:11Well, pleasure to meet you.
1:13I've never met an integrated circuit before.
1:16Is that what IC stands for?
1:18Oh, ja.
1:18Ah! Integrated circuits, like me, contain a whole circuit inside of our handsome
1:24exterior.
1:25And that's why we have so many connections.
1:28Wait a minute. You have a whole circuit inside of you?
1:32Oh, yeah! It's true. If you built my circuit yourself, it would look like this.
1:41Whoa! That's pretty big!
1:43Yeah! If it wasn't for ICs, our electronics would be huge!
1:49People wouldn't be able to fit their phones in their pockets!
1:52Yikes!
1:53So, what we do is shrink the circuit down to a much smaller size.
2:01Amazing!
2:02Now that the circuit is completely put together, or integrated, into
2:08a tiny little package.
2:09So there's a little circuit board inside every IC?
2:14There is, but because we make it so small, it looks a bit different and it's much
2:20flatter.
2:30Wow! How could you make such a tiny circuit?
2:34We have robots, just like you, who can make a whole bunch of them at once.
2:40A bit like a sheet of cookies.
2:42Cookies? Sounds good to me.
2:49This batch here contains hundreds of tiny ICs.
2:53All we need to do is cut them apart and put each one in its own protective package.
3:05So you see, there's a lot going on inside of an integrated circuit.
3:11Why, yes Hans, I see.
3:15Get it?
3:17I see?
3:19Oh ho ho, yeah!
3:21A joke!
3:22[laughter]
3:27Sorry.
3:42We'll see you next time.
