0:31Hi Hans, what are you doing?

0:35Hi Connie, well as you know I am a 555 timer IC,

0:41so I'm pretty good at sending out pulses

0:43of electricity in perfect time.

0:47Normally I can blink an LED just fine, but for some reason I can't make this high

0:52power LED flash.

0:54Oh, you probably just need to give it a little more electrical current.

0:59Hmm, you may be right. But I can only supply a bit of current from my pins here.

1:05My integrated circuit was not designed for driving a lot of current.

1:10Well, you're mighty lucky I came along. I can help you.

1:14Really? How?

1:16I may be small, but I'm pretty strong.

1:20I can push and pull ten times as much current as you can,

1:23and manage enough power to light this big LED.

1:26I just need you to tell me when to turn it on.

1:29Oh? How do I do that?

1:32Just grab my hand, like this.

1:44So now, you just keep sending electrical pulses through your output pin like you

1:49were doing before.

1:50My other pin is connected to the positive leg of the LED, and all three of us are

1:55connected to ground.

1:56Whenever you send an electrical pulse to my left pin, I'll know you want me to do

2:00the same on my right pin.

2:02What I mean to say is, when you turn your pin on, I'll turn the high power to the

2:07LED on.

2:08And when you turn your pin off, I'll turn power to the LED off.

2:12You ready?

2:13Okay, yeah. Let's give it a go.

2:17It's working!

2:19Connie, you are very strong.

2:22Just doing my job. I'm a MOSFET.

2:26You have a mossy feet. What in the wide world of sports is that?

2:30Oh, no, Hans, a MOSFET.

2:33That stands for metal oxide field effect transistor.

2:37I can take weak electrical signals and strengthen them.

2:41Those small signals can then control much larger amounts of current.

2:45I use three connections to make that happen.

2:48My source pin connects to the source electrons I want to control the flow of,

2:52you know, such as ground or negative connection on a power supply.

2:57My drain pin connects to positive power.

3:00And my gate pin connects to the signal,

3:03which tells me when to turn the higher current connection on or off.

3:08so you empower smaller electrical signals to make them bigger

3:14that's true you know some folks

3:18even call me an amplifier Connie the amplifying MOSFET

3:23sounds like a superhero thanks Hans

3:27well i told Cappy i'd meet him at an audio circuit around 2 30

3:33he wants help to make his

3:35stereo speaker louder. So how long do we have to flash this

3:40LED for? Oh, just like another 400,000

3:45milliseconds. So you should be fine. Oh, okay.

4:13I'll see you next time.
